So, Katie and I have been having an amazing time traversing the country for the past week, driving from Nashville, where she's been living for the past few years, to Sonoma, where she's moving. We've stopped in New Orleans, Austin, Santa Fe, and are now in the hotel room of our final stop, Las Vegas, where I am awake way, way too early considering how late we stayed up last night (not to mention how many cocktails we had). I've learned a lot about myself, about Katie, and about the country in which we live. Here's a taste:
1. Comfortable silence is indicative of a good friendship. You don't always need to talk.
2. People make a lot more eye contact in the South.
3. Southern hospitality should really make its way to the rest of the country.
4. Bourbon Street in New Orleans is reminiscent of Tijuana.
5. In Austin, TX, it is possible to eat and drink extremely well for very little money. It's also full of great culture and cool people. I could live there.
6. Santa Fe has delicious red and green chile sauce and beautiful art, but for some reason, its inhabitants can't park to save their lives.
7. Men are a whole lot more direct in Tennessee. And Louisiana. And Texas. And Nevada. Pretty much everywhere other than San Francisco.
8. If you're in the South and you want to say something mean about someone, say "bless his (or her) little heart" first. For example: "Bless his little heart, but Mike is a fucking idiot." Or, "Bless her little heart, but Sarah smells like a dumpster outside a Captain D's."
9. You are never too old to do flips and handstands in a swimming pool. It's good for the soul (and the body).
10. It's good to ignore your cell phone for a little while sometimes.
11. Traveling with a cute dog is more fun than traveling without one.
12. The ideal road trip buddy is on relatively similar financial, food, sleep and pee-stop pages as you are. Katie and I have it down to a science.
13. Free motel breakfasts have the potential to be wildly sketchy. But hey, free Frosted Flakes are free Frosted Flakes.
14. In terms of attire, Las Vegas is to women in their late 20's and 30's as Halloween is to college girls.
15. When creating epic, wonderful, beautiful memories that you and your best friend will someday share with your respective children (well, the highly-censored version, anyway), take pictures.
